Israel's Bet on Quantum Sensors

While most of the world is focused on quantum computing, Israel is making big moves in a more immediate application: quantum sensors.

Quantum sensors can detect minute changes in gravity, magnetism, and motion. Israeli quantum technology is allowing submarines to navigate without GPS, soldiers to detect underground tunnels, and airports to scan for concealed threats without radiation.

In true Israeli fashion, much of this work originated in the IDF and Mossad R&D, and is now spinning out into dual-use civilian tech.

The Weizmann Institute, Bar-Ilan, and Hebrew University have all made major breakthroughs in quantum metrology and ultra-sensitive magnetometers, used in both brain imaging and border security.

In 2023, Israel launched a $60 million National Quantum Initiative, funding labs, startups, and a new quantum research center in Beer Sheva.
