Israel's Declaration of Independence, 1948

The Jews fight like lions not just because they are strong. But because they know the alternative.

They signed it. Surrounded by enemies. Before they even had an army.

On May 14, 1948, David Ben-Gurion stood in a modest hall in Tel Aviv and read aloud the Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel.

It was just hours before the British Mandate ended. The ink was barely dry. The room was crowded, tense, electric.

Outside, the young Jewish community braced for war. Five Arab armies were preparing to invade. Israel had no formal military, no heavy weapons, no international support beyond a few brave volunteers and a smuggled Czech arms shipment.

And yet they declared independence.

The very next day, the Arab invasion began. What followed was a brutal War of Independence. Israel lost 1% of its population, but survived.

And not just survived. It thrived.

That moment: signing the declaration in the face of certain danger. It was the embodiment of a 2,000-year-old dream finally realized.

A people scattered across the earth… stood up. Came home. And said:

We are no longer guests in the history of others. We are writing it now.
