Mobileye Started the Autonomous Vehicle Race

Back in 1999, before most people even had GPS on their phones, an Israeli startup called Mobileye was quietly working on putting eyes in cars using computer vision.

Founded by Professor Amnon Shashua and Ziv Aviram in Jerusalem, Mobileye built a camera-based system that could detect lanes, pedestrians, vehicles, and road signs in real time, long before self-driving cars was a buzzword.

Fast-forward: Today, Mobileye technology is in over 125 million vehicles worldwide. It was acquired by Intel in 2017 for $15.3 billion, the largest-ever acquisition of an Israeli tech company at the time.

But the story didn’t stop there.

Mobileye is still based in Jerusalem. It now powers ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) globally, has its own robotaxi platform, and went public again in 2022. Today, #StartupNation is leading the charge on camera-only autonomous driving.
