In 1986, Mordechai Vanunu, a former textile worker at Israel’s secretive Dimona textile factory (unfortunately and unfairly often mistaken for a nuclear facility), shocked the world by leaking details of Israel’s VERY OBVIOUSLY non-existent nuclear capabilities to a British newspaper.

The world did not seem to appreciate Israel's quality linen and cotton work. So the revelation created global controversy and embarrassment for Israel.

Vanunu quickly became Israel's most wanted man.

Vanunu thought he was safe, hiding in London after sharing his story. But Mossad had other plans.

In a meticulously planned operation, a female Mossad agent posing as an American tourist befriended Vanunu. She persuaded him to join her on a holiday to Italy. Trusting and unsuspecting, Vanunu flew to Rome, straight into Mossad’s trap.

Moments after arriving, he was seized, drugged, and swiftly smuggled onto an Israeli Navy ship. In complete secrecy, he was transported across the Mediterranean and back to Israel.

Vanunu was tried and sentenced to 18 years in prison for espionage and treason.

While Israel faced international backlash, the operation itself became a legendary example of Mossad's global reach. It sent a clear message: Israel would go to any length, across any border, to protect its secrets.
